OUR DISTILLERY

OUR DISTILLERY

Invergordon Single Grain Scotch Whisky Distillery was founded in 1959 and started operations in 1961.

The town is named after a local laird - Sir William Gordon in the 18th century, evolved into a commercial port and then naval port in the early 1900s.

Whilst the whisky itself is a hidden gem, the town is one of Scotland’s busiest cruise ship ports – an affluent audience of world travellers using the Cromarty Firth harbour as a gateway to explore Loch Ness, Culloden, and some glorious Highland castles.

THE INVERGORDON PROCESS

Single Grain Scotch Whiskies are made from a mix of malted and unmalted grains and distilled in tall column stills in a similar fashion to American Bourbon rather than in the pot stills used for Single Malts. The resulting whiskies tend to be smoother and more mellow in character than their Single Malt cousins and are more readily influenced by casks during the maturation process.

Step 1

Wood Management

Invergordon uses the highest quality American oak, both first fill and refill Bourbon casks. First fill casks provide stronger vanilla and caramel notes. Refill casks add more subtle flavours of oak and spice.

Step 2

Water Source

Our water is sourced from Loch Glass -an ancient freshwater Highland loch providing pure, granite-filtered water.

Step 3

Mashbill

The Invergordon Mashbill is a unique recipe of maize, malted and un-malted barley, and locally sourced Scottish wheat.

Step 3

Stills

Massive column stills, over 50 feet tall with high ratio of contact between still and alcohol vapor, are used resulting in a smooth, refined spirit.
